Happy Holidays!

In 2009, MAKE celebrated its fourth year of publication as we prepared to launch our most ambitious issue to date. The recently released MAKE Issue 8, themed "This Everyday," showcases a complete redesign, the inclusion of almost twice as many pages: twice as many writers and now, in a larger role, visual artists. In addition to producing our biannual print magazine, the staff of MAKE Literary Productions, NFP also produced a number of events in aimed at bringing together local and national writers, visual artists, and musicians. All of this is undertaken at a time when print publications, particularly literary, are faced with slumping sales and stiff competition from electronic media.

Is it absurd to continue conceiving and printing a literary magazine? At MAKE, we say Absolutely Not. We believe in the power of print and the magic of the object. We also greatly appreciate the advantages offered by online media, which is why our print and online publishing efforts are moving forward with gusto. Most importantly, we believe in the writers and artists we are privileged to promote. Their work deserves readers, just as readers deserve a "conscientiously edited" magazine. To continue our work, we ask for your support.

In February, we will release MAKE Issue 9, themed "MYTH, Magic & Ritual," with exciting new content from established writers Irvine Welsh, Kathleen Rooney, Lily Hoang, Dara Weir, Mary Ruefle, and Jenny Boully and visual art from David Dunlap, Deva Graf, Katy Fisher, and Tim Werhle. And of course, many, many amazing pieces from emerging writers selected from submitted work.

New online pieces, including book reviews, audio recordings, a blog about Chicago, The Silver-Colored Yesterday by Joseph Drogos, collaborative projects, such as those from video artists and poets, and items from previous issues, are being posted frequently.

We really appreciate your attendance at the release parties, readings and special events held in 2009 and hope to continue to see you in 2010 at events in Chicago, Denver, Iowa City, Omaha, and more!

Please consider subscribing or making a tax-deductible donation to MAKE Literary Productions, NFP to ensure our efforts to publish and distribute exemplary literature continue. Your contribution would be applied directly to printing costs.

To everyone who has lent a hand with their time, creativity, enthusiasm, submissions, by purchasing the magazine and just by showing up, thank you.

With gratitude,

The editors and staff of MAKE

We’re particularly fond of this line: "All in all, even though this is only MAKE’s 8th issue, the layout is as slick and professional as any journal that has been around for decades. My recommendation: this magazine is well worth the $10 cover price."-Anthony Bonds
